Celebrations
for ASWA’s 55th Anniversary May 2005
To celebrate ASWA’s 55th Anniversary, in addition to the
annual evening dinner at the Pines TAFE Restaurant in Bentley,
a special Luncheon was held at the same venue for the Society’s
eight Honorary Life Members to acknowledge their contribution
to the founding and ongoing well-being of the Society over many
years. Unfortunately, Dr Ivan Nikoloff – retired ex-Government
Astronomer – was not able to attend. Five Councillors joined
the Honorary Life Members and their partners for the luncheon
and conversations ranged from reminiscing about achievements in
‘the good old days’, especially the tracking-station
set up in Como in 1957 to assist in tracking the first satellites
in space; also when ASWA set up an especially bright reflecting
light facing skywards hoping John Glenn, when he made the first
manned flight in space, would see it as he passed over Perth [it
is believed he did], through to modern technology and the happenings
in the Society in more recent times. For interesting and detailed
stories of these and other ASWA achievements and history click
on ‘Sidereal Times’, then ‘Genesis Plus 10’.
